Politics & Populism
Around the world, from Italy to Brazil, and from Hungary to the United States, populist candidates and governments are fundamentally changing the political landscape. In this course, we explore the nature of populism; investigate whether populism poses an existential threat to liberal democracy; explore the causes of the populist rise; and discuss what strategies might allow non-populist political actors to push back.
Yascha Mounk is an Associate Professor of the Practice of International Affairs as well as a Senior Fellow of the Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University. He is also a Contributing Editor at The Atlantic and the host of The Good Fight podcast. His latest book is The People vs Democracy: Why Our Freedom Is In Danger and How to Save It.
