Dr. Jerry Burgess. KSAS '13 (PhD) and the JHU Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences host a dynamic discussion featuring three corporate leaders driving impact and change within the sustainability space. The conversation will feature Emma Stewart (Netflix), Anisa Kamadoli Consta (Rivian), and Dave Stangis (Apollo) and will be moderated by alumnus Scott Atkinson, A&S '20(MS) (Heidrick & Struggles).
Emma Stewart, Ph.D., is the Netflix Sustainability Officer where she is responsible for the company's climate and environmental strategy and execution. She oversees all company-wide work to decarbonize Netflix corporate and production operations, to further raise environmental awareness through TV and film titles, and to engage the 200+ million Netflix households on sustainability. She previously led World Resources Institute's global work on urban efficiency, climate, and finance, served as a Board member for Ecomedes and the U.S. Green Building Council, and as professional faculty at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business and Stanford Graduate School of Business where she taught "Intrapreneurship for Sustainability." Emma holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Management from Stanford University and a B.A. Honours degree in Human Sciences from Oxford University.
As a Rivian‘s first-ever Chief Sustainability Officer, and an experienced philanthropic executive, Anisa Kamadoli Costa is responsible for the company’s overall sustainability strategy. She also serves as Trustee and President of the Rivian Foundation. Anisa most recently held the position of Chief Sustainability Officer at Tiffany & Co. and Chairman and President of the Tiffany & Co. Foundation. Under Anisa’s leadership, Tiffany & Co. consistently earned top sustainability ratings and was ranked #4 on Barron’s “Most Sustainable Companies” list. Anisa holds a bachelor’s degree from Barnard College and a master’s degree from Columbia University, and completed Harvard Business School’s Program for Leadership Development.
Dave Stangis is Partner and Chief Sustainability Officer at Apollo and a member of the Firm’s Leadership Team. Prior to joining Apollo, Dave founded 21C Impact, an advisory firm dedicated to delivering a differentiated impact on business results with a focus on ESG and corporate sustainability initiatives. Previously, he was Chief Sustainability Officer at Campbell Soup Company where he created and led the company’s ESG, Corporate Citizenship, Sustainability & Public Affairs strategies. Dave joined Campbell from Intel Corporation, where he served as the Company’s first Global Director of Corporate Responsibility.Dave currently serves as a mentor to the AgFunder Network. He previously served as Executive Adviser at the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship, Entrepreneur in Residence at Babson College, and Instructor in Villanova University’s Sustainable Enterprise Executive Education program.
Scott Atkinson is a partner in Heidrick & Struggles’ San Francisco office and co-head of the global Sustainability Practice. He places chief executives, board directors, chief sustainability officers/ESG leaders, and senior executives within companies and organizations that focus on driving environmental and social impact initiatives around the world. Scott also consults on the governance and leadership implications of investor demand for ESG (sustainability) performance.
Jerry L. Burgess, Ph.D., is a faculty member in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and is the Director of Environmental Science and Studies Program. Dr. Burgess received his doctorate in Geoecology from Johns Hopkins University. His research interests are highly interdisciplinary utilizing the disciplines of biology, ecology, geology and soil science to explore community dynamics and invasive ecology in urban, rural and forested landscapes. Dr. Burgess has worked in a variety of academic, research, educational and consultant-based settings; his current projects include conservation threats to edaphic ecosystems and tectonics of the Appalachians.
