Beyond Propaganda

Beyond Propaganda

Starting in Putin's Russia, this course will analyze how propaganda has been transformed across the world. Join Peter Pomerantsev to look at how this challenges traditional ways of defining a democratic information environment, and consider ways we can reinvent a world besieged by bots, trolls, fake news and post-truth politicians.

Assigned readings: "Nothing is True and Everything is Possible" and "This is Not Propaganda."

Peter Pomerantsev is a Research Fellow at the Agora Institute, JHU, where he runs the Arena Initiative. Formerly based at the LSE, Arena researches ways to overcome extreme polarization and disinformation. Peter is also a writer. His memoir of Putin's Russia, Nothing is True and Everything is Possible, won the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize and his latest book, This is Not Propaganda, is nominated for the Gordon Burn Prize. He frequently presents radios series on the BBC, most recently about disinformation around science.
